# Alumina Lumps

Many synthesis gas plants and even some licensors prefer irregular, asymmetrical chunks of pure fused alumina, also known as **ALUMINA LUMPS**, as both topping media and as bottom support media in SECONDARY reformers and AUTOTHERMAL REFORMERS (ATRs).

It is believed that the random sizes and shapes of **ALUMINA LUMPS** force the process gas into torturous paths with high velocity turns and as a result helps to trap particulate contamination and therefore slows the increase in bed pressure drop.
